Project Expedition Mission

Private Trip for experienced, expert, do-it-yourself rafters on an 18-day expedition through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River.

Day -3

Primary meeting at Coloma/Lotus, etc Camp on the S. Fork of the American River. All equipment assembled, initial food packing and loading of trucks and vehicles for the trip. Our route took us through the Sierra's up near Gardnerville and the E. Fork of the Carson River where we would camp our first night off the road on Highway 395 S., some were looking for the hot springs because it turned out to be our coldest, frozen nite of camping.

Day -2

Arrived in Arizona, some cars lost, camped out near Williams, AZ.

Day -1

Arrived in Flagstaff, meeting at Macy's full group assembled and we purchased last equipment and the final food buy with perishables. We went to Canyon REO and rented two boats, an Avon PRO retrofitted self-bailer, and a brand new STAR self-bailer. We also picked up two boats that had been rented from OU and used on a previous canyon trip with 5 flips the month before. We made final shuttle arrangements, got 6 toilet rocket boxes and headed out north for Lee's Ferry.

Day 0

Launch at Lee's Ferry and passed Ten Mile Rock, Navaho Bridge. River still clear and green.

Day 1

10-mile Rock and the Navaho Bridge. Dirk found a tiny scorpion under his camp tarp.

Day 2

Fresh fish.

Day 3

Day 4

Rattlesnake on our trail.

Day 5

Vasey's Spring, first water fill-up. Redwall Cavern.

Day 6

Lucky I spotted a scorpion in my life vest (PFD).

Day 7

Hike up to the Anasi graineries, some 1000 years old.

Day 8

Caught up to the group that launched 2 days ahead of us, from Texas.

Day 9

Phantom Ranch, water fill-up. Crystal Rapid, 10+, rained so hard we had to stop.

Day 10

Camp washout after a hike.

Day 11

Hermit Rapid, 25 foot standing waves.

Day 12

Caught up to the group that launched 1 day ahead of us.

Day 13

Olo canyon hike, Bill Lee broke his foot and we had to do an extraction, but Bill did most of the work himself. Tara's foot became infected and swollen after stepping on a cactus a few days earlier. Dirk coming down with a cold, thus knocking out 3 of our primary rowers.

Day 14

Lava Falls 10+, water fill-up

Day 15

We sat Bill down next to a rattlesnake after Vulcan's Anvil.

Day 16

W-Rig set up with our 5 rafts.

Day 17

A farewell sendoff by bighorn sheep.

Day 18

Diamond Creek take out early on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, our own shuttle cars their early. Donnie Dove's shuttle came later, we packed up quickly and divided up, reassembling 20 miles later at Pete's Springs for needed refreshments and further shifting of gear and people.
